Sunday Service 5th April 2020

5 Apr 2020

Welcome to our Sunday service!

This Sunday City Church are meeting virtually! We think it's vital as God's people to keep meeting together in whatever way we can. We need to be teaching, encouraging, comforting and spurring each other on to live for Jesus in testing and unpredictable times.

At 10:40AM, do join with us as we learn, pray and sing together. There is a children's talk, a sermon, a prayer time, and several songs to help us respond to what we hear. If you're part of one of our small groups working through the service together, you'll be meeting with your group at 10:30AM to chat and catch up before joining the service at 10:40.

You'll also be meeting virtually after the service to discuss and pray together. Your group leader will guide you through the timings and discussion questions. We're praying that God will use this virtual time together to encourage and build us up in very concrete ways!

Children's Song - Jesus is the King

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King. He is the King!

He commanded the fishermen,
"Hey, Come follow me!"
And they did, and they did, and they did!
Because...

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King. He is the King!

He commanded the evil ones,
"Hey, come out of him!"
And they did, and they did, and they did!
Because...

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King. He is the King!

He commanded the wind and waves,
"Hey, be still, be still!"
And they did, and they did, and they did!
Because...

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King. He is the King!

He promised that three days after death
He'd rise again
And he did, and he did, and he did!
Because...

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King

Jesus is the King, ruler over everything;
Jesus is the one, promised one, the Son of God:
Jesus is the Lord, He's the one you can't ignore
Jesus, Jesus: He is the King. He is the King. He is the King!

Song - 10,000 Reasons

Bless the Lord oh my soul,
Oh my soul:
Worship His Holy name!
Sing like never before,
Oh my soul,
I'll worship Your Holy name!

The sun comes up;
It's a new day dawning:
It's time to sing Your song again.
Whatever may pass,
And whatever lies before me,
Let me be singing
When the evening comes.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul,
Oh my soul:
Worship His Holy name!
Sing like never before,
Oh my soul,
I'll worship Your Holy name!

You're rich in love
And You're slow to anger;
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind.
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing:
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul,
Oh my soul:
Worship His Holy name!
Sing like never before,
Oh my soul,
I'll worship Your Holy name!

And on that day
When my strength is failing,
The end draws near
And my time has come.
Still my soul will sing
Your praise unending:
Ten thousand years
And then forevermore.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul,
Oh my soul:
Worship His Holy name!
Sing like never before,
Oh my soul,
I'll worship Your Holy name!

Bless the Lord, oh my soul,
Oh my soul:
Worship His Holy name!
Sing like never before,
Oh my soul,
I'll worship Your Holy name,
Yes I'll worship Your Holy name,
I'll worship Your Holy name!

Prayers for the Church and the World

Sermon

Scripture reading

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Response Song - This is our God, the servant King

From heaven you came, helpless babe,
Entered our world, your glory veiled;
Not to be served but to serve,
And give your life that we might live.

This is our God, the Servant King,
He calls us now to follow him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King.

There in the garden of tears,
My heavy load he chose to bear;
His heart with sorrow was torn,
'Yet not my will but yours,' he said.

This is our God, the Servant King,
He calls us now to follow him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King.

Come, see his hands and his feet,
The scars that speak of sacrifice,
Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered.

This is our God, the Servant King,
He calls us now to follow him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King.

So let us learn how to serve,
And in our lives enthrone him;
Each other's needs to prefer,
For it is Christ we're serving.

This is our God, the Servant King,
He calls us now to follow him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it look like for us to keep on trusting in the cross at this time?
  2. When do we need to remind ourselves that 'we are clean'? How are we going to do that?
  3. What may it look like to humbly and sacrificially serve others? How will remembering Jesus help us when we don't want to serve others?

Do take some time in your small groups to discuss the questions.

After that, please take some time to share prayer requests.
